So I did it again! Changed my plans yet again.
Afterall, what's a girl to do when 2 1/2 yards of raw silk is just
sitting there smiling on the remnant table at Calico.
I swear it was smiling, or maybe even cooing.

Though it was probably just me.
My original plan had been to do a shaped curvy, glam, maybe
tufted, maybe nailhead headboard, but this silk was way too
good to pass up. $23 for all of it. Formerly $68 per yard.
It was too good a score for a die hard bargain hunter.

And such scrumptious texture!
So I did what any zealous DIY'er worth her salt would do.
I shifted gears and considered my options.
I knew it was just enough fabric to upholster a
a headboard with an inner section like this.

The construction would be pretty simple on this one
If I wasn't so lazy I may have figured out how
to do a curve at the top. In the end impatience won out.

This is quite lovely. Wish I could find some old legs like this.
In the end I wound up with something similar to this classic design.
I spent about two hours in the trim department at Lowes figuring
out all my cuts and pieces. The guy kept asking me if I needed
help. Help? Ha, I scoff. How could you possibly help me I
muttered under my breath. How good sir, would you be able to
help me design a headboard of belgian goodness around 2 1/2
yards of gorgeous textile? Be-gone with you!
What I came up with was a set of strategically placed 1 X 2's pieced together around my plywood base. The thickness of the plywood allowed me to sandwich my 1 x 2's around it.
A few pieces of trim, corner medallions, and wood finials
finished it off and hid the piece parts.
The total cost of wood was around $110
Here's a better view albeit somewhat fuzzy from the iphone.
I started with a piece of plywood (I'll check exact measurements later). Then I attached my first 1 x 2 (the one with the black screw in it). That's the beginning of the frame and leg. Then I sandwiched it on the side and top to create my raised edge for the upholstered inner section.
You can see that first 1 x 2. See the one turned on it's side to create the encasement?
I also had in my hot little hands a 30% off coupon from Kohls.
This particular bright idea did not pan out as well as I had hoped.
I picked up a 1 1/2" tempurpedic mattress topper for $40 plus I think an addt'l 30% off.
I kid you not, it was like wrestling an alligator getting it to take
the staples. It caused some puckering as well.
Never again! Be sure to buy real 3" thick upholstery foam.
Here's that sandwich again from the back of the headboard.
I know it looks confusing but it really goes together step by step fairly easy.
I added another 1 x 6 to stabilize the legs and really could add another 1 x 2 to stabalize it further. Hmmm, we'll see. It seems to be very sturdy and just fine without it.
A flat flange was glued on to cover the staples
I just cannot wait to figure out the bedding!
My old bench from Bombay got a coat of paint and cover as well.
I always say Ya can't hit a moving target, a rolling stone gathers no moss, yada, yada, yada...

I swear, it's like an upholstery shop in here
Will the messes ever end?
Someday soon I'll be lounging in my chair or under my faux fur throw or hanging out with my hubby, ya know like Kate and Andy Spade, Ahhhh
