The Rogue Housewife takes a nap?

My weekend started off with a bang!
To start off, my scrappy little chair was featured on
Miss Mustard Seed's Furniture Feature Friday.

  Woo hoo!
That's just crazy, fabulous!

and, my guys left to go skiing in Vermont on Friday.
They sure are happy campers with all that snow!

I never mind when they go away and leave me home alone.
As soon as they leave I get busy!
It's my freedom time to do whatever I please.
  Enter...stage left....the rogue housewife!

After I shoveled the whole driveway!!!
(downside of men being away) I began work on
a round ottoman to go with my scrappy little chair.
I found a great way to cut a circle.  I tried it first with some string around a nail and that was just not static enough to get the circle even all the way around.
Then I switched to a piece of cardboard hammered in the center.  All I had to do was poke a hole for the pen to make the circle.

These cute little legs are from Lowes @ $6 each

I drilled a hole for each leg and then just screwed
them in from the top.

I happened to have some cheap foam from
Walmart which I cut into four giant pancakes.

At first I thought I would only need two pancakes so I layered it all together to get the measurement for the wood spacers.

Here are the spacers and my house guest Zippy.
What is it with these dogs?  They just love the spotlight.
such a ham!

Here's the sandwich.
(Lots of food references.  Ham, sandwich, pancakes...hmmm, guess I'm hungry)

I cut three strips from a concrete footing tube
and stapled it around the outside.

Here it is, ready to be upholstered.  The little imperfections
will disappear when I add the batting.

If you decide to make your own little round ottoman
you may want to purchase some thicker foam.
This mattress foam was around ten dollars and it had
the added benefit of already being in my closet.

Tomorrow I'll add some batting and upholster with plain duck.
I like the idea of making slipcovers I can switch out and wash when needed.

I can have fun with pleats, ruffles, cord, flange or even fur!

I could really use a nap now (and some pancakes)
 must've been the shoveling...

  2. Hey Maureen,
Thanks! I was cracking up reading your brilliant Colin Firth post. Loved your winter wonderland pictures too. You sure do have a lot of snow. We got about 6 inches over the weekend and that's quite enough for me.

  5. Can't wait to see the finished ottoman. Your chair made such an impression on me... it was the topic of conversation when I was talking with my mother yesterday...along with discussing how much I wish she had taught me to sew!

  6. Hi Melinda,
It's not too late to learn to sew! Besides the ubiquitous home classes everyone had, my mother taught me how to hem and that's about it. If you can sew a straight line you can sew. I'm thinking of getting some linen to sew some euro shams. Shams are a great first project. I have the most fun and most success when I throw away the patterns and just whack things together. Thanks so much for stopping by! My scrappy little ottoman is almost done!
